Hungarian members of the European Parliament from the FIDESZ–KDNP party group have voiced criticism towards the European Commission, accusing it of not taking a definitive stance on recent constitutional and political changes in Hungary. These changes, they claim, threaten the integrity of democratic institutions within the country.

During a collaborative session held by the European Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the Commission to articulate its position regarding several issues. These include amendments to the constitution, limitations on political competition, modifications impacting parliamentary mandates, and concerns about the autonomy of state institutions.

The delegation from FIDESZ–KDNP pointed out that the European Commission had previously voiced concerns over Hungary’s adherence to the rule of law and had even withheld EU funds as a result. However, they noted a lack of response from the Commission concerning the most recent developments in Hungary’s political landscape. The lawmakers also questioned whether these constitutional amendments align with the democratic standards expected within the European Union.

The Hungarian delegation emphasized that principles of democracy should be uniformly enforced across all EU member states. However, during the hearing, the representatives from the Commission did not provide comprehensive answers to the inquiries posed by the MEPs.
