Poland Stops Russian Plan to Assassinate Ukrainian-American in Warsaw

Published on

Polish authorities have thwarted an alleged plot backed by Russia to assassinate a Ukrainian-American citizen in Warsaw, as announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He highlighted the unprecedented nature of this case, noting that it marks the first known attempt by a Russian-linked actor to target a US citizen within another NATO member country. Polish officials identified the intended target as a US citizen of Ukrainian descent, whom the Russian government allegedly viewed as a threat.

Authorities arrested a suspect on August 7 in Poland, accusing them of being recruited by Russian intelligence services. The suspect is currently in custody for three months. This operation was conducted in collaboration with US intelligence agencies, according to Poland’s minister responsible for overseeing intelligence operations. This incident raises further concerns in Europe about alleged Russian operations targeting political adversaries, supporters of Ukraine, and others perceived as hostile by Moscow.

Amidst these concerns, European authorities have previously intercepted suspected assassination, sabotage, and arson plots, purportedly linked to Russian intelligence networks. Prime Minister Tusk cautioned that Russia might continue to target individuals it deems inconvenient in various countries, emphasizing the need for Poland and its allies to remain vigilant in preventing such operations.

In response to these allegations, the Russian government has yet to issue a statement. Meanwhile, the US State Department has acknowledged awareness of the reports but has not provided any additional information at this time. This latest development adds to a growing list of incidents across Europe that Western officials associate with alleged Russian intelligence activities, particularly following the onset of the conflict in Ukraine.
