Brussels Airlines is set to implement a new fare structure that will eliminate free overhead cabin baggage from its most affordable tickets on short and medium-haul routes. Currently, under the Economy Light fare, passengers are allowed to bring both a personal item and a standard cabin bag. However, the forthcoming Economy Basic fare will limit travelers to a small personal item that must fit under the seat, such as a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack.

Passengers who wish to carry a larger cabin suitcase will have to either opt for a higher fare category or incur an additional fee. This new fare option will be trialed starting April 28, for flights departing from May 19 on select routes. Should the test prove successful, there are plans to expand this pricing model across the airline’s European network. This adjustment is part of a broader initiative by the Lufthansa Group, which encompasses Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Air Dolomiti.

According to the airlines, this change is intended to offer more flexibility, allowing travelers who pack light to benefit from lower fares. However, for passengers who routinely bring cabin luggage, the overall cost difference may be negligible once baggage fees are taken into account. The new policy is likely to significantly affect business travelers, frequent flyers, expatriates, and families who often depend on cabin baggage to circumvent checked luggage fees and airport wait times.

Travelers are advised to scrutinize fare conditions meticulously before making bookings and to consider the total cost of travel, including any potential baggage fees, rather than focusing solely on the advertised ticket price. While the new fare could offer savings for those carrying only a personal item, for many, the cheapest ticket may no longer equate to the lowest overall travel expense.
