The European Union has emphasized India’s significance as one of its key strategic partners, with both entities advancing collaboration across various domains including trade, technology, security, and connectivity. This partnership is underscored by ongoing efforts to finalize a historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by year’s end, which could be a milestone in their growing relationship.
Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly, at the commencement of Ireland’s presidency of the EU Council, highlighted that the EU-India partnership extends far beyond trade. It encompasses areas such as technology, research, climate action, maritime security, resilient supply chains, and digital cooperation. According to Kelly, these strengthened ties are crucial for tackling global challenges and fostering sustainable economic growth.
The anticipated India-EU Free Trade Agreement, with negotiations already concluded, is on track for formal signing by December, potentially coming into effect early next year. This agreement is a testament to the expanded cooperation between the two in critical sectors like defense, security, and emerging technologies, a necessity in response to evolving global economic and geopolitical dynamics.
EU Ambassador Herve Delphin remarked on the adaptation required by both Europe and India in the face of a shifting global landscape. He pointed out their pursuit of greater strategic autonomy while maintaining robust partnerships. Delphin also underscored the significance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and secure global trade routes, advocating for enhanced India-EU collaboration on maritime security and regional stability.
