In a recent statement from Kyiv, Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin revealed the findings of an investigation into alumina exports from the Aughinish Alumina plant in County Limerick, which is under Russian ownership. The inquiry has not uncovered definitive evidence that these exports are being channeled to Russian weapons manufacturers. Speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Martin mentioned that while no concrete link was found, the possibility has not been entirely dismissed, highlighting the issue’s significance at both Irish and European levels.
The investigation’s results are nearing completion and are set to be forwarded to the European Commission for further evaluation. Martin’s visit to Ukraine underscores Ireland’s ongoing commitment to supporting the country amidst its conflict. In a demonstration of this support, Martin announced a substantial aid package totaling €125 million aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense and energy sectors. Of this amount, €100 million is allocated for non-lethal military assistance, primarily to enhance Ukraine’s air defense systems, while the remaining €25 million is designated to safeguard and rehabilitate the nation’s critical energy infrastructure as winter approaches.
In addition to addressing the alumina export investigation, Martin reiterated Ireland’s backing of Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union. He emphasized that advancing Ukraine’s EU membership would remain a focal point during Ireland’s presidency of the EU. This commitment aligns with Ireland’s strategic priorities and reflects broader European support for Ukraine’s integration into the EU framework.
Martin’s visit to Kyiv includes a series of engagements, such as meetings with Ukrainian parliamentary leaders and Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi.
