In a bid to bolster regional cooperation and accelerate the Western Balkans’ journey towards European Union membership, leaders from the EU and the Western Balkans convened in Tivat, Montenegro. This summit, occurring half a year after their last meeting in Brussels, centered on the theme “Shared Prosperity and Stability of the EU and the Western Balkans.” The discussions at the summit primarily revolved around EU enlargement, economic integration, security collaboration, and enhancing regional resilience amidst rising geopolitical challenges.
EU representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Western Balkans in their aspirations for EU membership. They took stock of the progress made in integrating the region into the EU’s economic framework. A significant focal point was the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, introduced in 2023, which allocates up to €6 billion to aid reforms, stimulate investments, and facilitate closer participation in the EU single market.
Moreover, the leaders engaged in talks about enhancing cooperation in foreign policy, defense, and cybersecurity. There was a particular emphasis on fortifying the region’s resilience against cyber threats, countering disinformation campaigns, and mitigating other forms of foreign interference. These discussions underscore the EU’s strategic priorities in maintaining stability and security in the region.
The summit also highlighted the European Union’s role as the Western Balkans’ largest trading partner, investor, and donor. EU leaders stressed the importance of ongoing reforms and regional cooperation as countries in the Western Balkans work towards potential EU membership. The discussions underscored the critical nature of these reforms in meeting EU standards and ensuring a smoother integration process.
