Irish Aviation Authority Cuts Dublin Airport Fees by 15% for Passengers

Published on

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has put forward a proposal to reduce the passenger charges that Dublin Airport imposes on airlines by 15% for the year 2027. This adjustment would see the fee decrease from €10.39 to €8.85 per passenger. According to the regulator, this proposed reduction is influenced by several factors, including higher-than-anticipated passenger numbers, increased commercial revenues derived from retail, parking, and food services, as well as postponed major infrastructure projects.

Passenger traffic at Dublin Airport is expected to see significant growth, with projections indicating an increase from 39.4 million in 2027 to 44.5 million by 2031. This surge in numbers is a key driver behind the IAA’s proposal, suggesting that the airport’s financial outlook is better than previously anticipated, allowing for the reduction in fees.

The airport’s operator, daa, has expressed concerns over this initiative, cautioning that it could hinder future infrastructure investments. These investments are deemed crucial for the development of new aircraft stands, terminal expansions, road upgrades, and various sustainability projects. The operator warns that without adequate funding from passenger charges, the airport’s capacity to support these essential improvements could be compromised.

In contrast, Ryanair has shown support for the proposed cut, highlighting the potential benefits for airline operations. The budget airline has indicated that the reduction could facilitate the addition of up to 2 million extra low-fare seats and enable the basing of three additional aircraft in Dublin, should the proposal receive approval.

The IAA plans to conduct a consultation process before making a final decision on the passenger charge adjustments. This step will involve gathering input from various stakeholders to ensure that the interests of all parties are considered before reaching a conclusion on the proposed fee reduction.
