Dublin Airport Passenger Fees Slashed by 15%, Proposes Irish Aviation Authority

Published on

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has put forward a proposal to slash the passenger charges at Dublin Airport by 15% in 2027. This would see the fees airlines pay drop from €10.39 to €8.85 per passenger. The suggested reduction stems from unexpectedly high passenger numbers, increased revenue from commercial activities such as retail, parking, and food services, and delays in major infrastructure projects.

Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport are expected to rise significantly, with projections showing growth from 39.4 million in 2027 to 44.5 million by 2031. This anticipated increase has been a key factor in the IAA’s decision to propose lowering the charges, as the airport’s revenue streams continue to strengthen.

The proposal has sparked differing reactions from stakeholders. Dublin Airport’s operator, daa, has expressed concern that the reduced charges could hinder investment in essential future infrastructure. This includes potential expansions such as new aircraft stands, terminal developments, road improvements, and sustainability initiatives, all of which are crucial for accommodating the expected rise in passenger numbers.

Conversely, Ryanair has welcomed the proposed fee reduction, highlighting the benefits it could bring. The airline suggested that if the proposal is approved, it could lead to the addition of up to 2 million low-fare seats and the stationing of three more aircraft in Dublin. This could enhance the airport’s connectivity and provide more travel options at competitive prices for passengers.

The IAA is set to enter a consultation phase before finalizing its decision on the proposed fee cut. This period will allow for further input and consideration from various stakeholders, ensuring that the final outcome aligns with the broader interests of the aviation sector and its future growth in Ireland.
