Hungary Declares Russia’s War a Direct Threat to Europe.

Published on

In a notable shift, Hungary is taking a firmer stance against Russia regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Hungarian government plans to officially state that Russia’s actions present a direct threat not only to Hungary but also to Europe and the Hungarian community residing in Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region. This comes as part of Hungary’s strategic outline for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session.

Budapest’s new position includes a strong condemnation of Russia’s military operations while reiterating its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and right to defend itself within its recognized borders. This move signifies a marked departure from Hungary’s previous approach to the conflict, aligning itself more closely with Ukraine and the broader European perspective.

However, this policy change has not gone unnoticed by Moscow. Russian officials have expressed concern over the potential deterioration of bilateral relations with Budapest. Russian lawmakers have particularly highlighted the implications for energy cooperation, which could impact Hungary’s access to Russian oil and natural gas supplies.

The decision underscores a significant recalibration in Hungary’s foreign policy amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. As Budapest adopts this new stance, it risks heightening tensions with Moscow, potentially affecting diplomatic and economic engagements between the two nations.
