Missiles and Drones Target Riyadh; Houthis Assert Responsibility Near Airport.

Published on

Yemen’s Houthi group has taken responsibility for recent missile and drone attacks on Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, leading to significant concern over regional security. The attacks targeted sensitive sites within the Saudi capital, with flames and heavy smoke reported near King Khalid International Airport. This event marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.

In response to the overnight attacks, Saudi authorities issued air raid alerts in Riyadh and several other major cities. This was the first time such warnings were activated in the capital since the conflict with the Houthis intensified in July. The Saudi military coalition reported that their air defenses successfully intercepted a missile aimed at Riyadh, and an all-clear was subsequently issued after emergency services managed a fire near a fuel tank at the airport.

The Houthis justified their actions as retaliation against Saudi military operations in Yemen, alleging that Saudi forces have conducted numerous airstrikes on their positions in recent days. This intensification of hostilities has sparked fears about the safety of civilian and energy infrastructure within Saudi Arabia. The United Nations Security Council has condemned the Houthi attacks, emphasizing the need to prevent the group from acquiring more weapons and military support.

The conflict’s escalation has also raised concerns about the security of shipping and energy supplies passing through the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a pivotal global maritime route. This renewed violence comes amid broader regional tensions involving Iran, the United States, and their allies. In light of these developments, Washington has advised American citizens in the region to exercise increased caution.
