Irish Taoiseach Warns UN of Potential Global Shame Over Gaza Suffering

Published on

Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheál Martin has warned that the full extent of the suffering in Gaza could bring shame to the world once all evidence and testimonies are documented. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Martin expressed his view that the international community has failed Palestine, noting that previous peace efforts have not effectively changed the situation on the ground.

Martin criticized actions that he believes are complicating a two-state solution, particularly pointing out the near-total impunity of violent Israeli settlers in the West Bank. He described the ongoing displacement and destruction faced by Palestinian communities as ethnic cleansing. Reaffirming Ireland’s stance, Martin emphasized the importance of a two-state solution where both a Palestinian state and an Israeli state can coexist peacefully and securely.

In his address, Martin also called for renewed negotiations between the United States and Iran, insisting that Iran must not obtain a nuclear weapon and should cease destabilizing activities in the region. He urged global support for international institutions like the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, emphasizing the need for a continued commitment to peace, human rights, and development.

The ongoing war in Ukraine was another major topic in Martin’s speech. He stated that Russia has the power to end its attacks but has chosen to continue the conflict, leading to increased global food and energy costs. Martin highlighted the broader implications of the war and its impact on international stability.

Ireland is also pursuing a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term, underscoring its commitment to advocating for human rights on a global scale. Martin’s address reflects Ireland’s active engagement in addressing international conflicts and promoting solutions through diplomatic channels.
