Vietnamese Communist Party General Secretary and President To Lam has commenced official visits to the European Union (EU) and Belgium, arriving in Brussels on Wednesday. These visits, conducted at the invitation of European Council President António Costa and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, aim to bolster diplomatic ties and enhance economic collaboration between Vietnam and its European counterparts.
The longstanding relationship between Vietnam and the EU dates back to 1990 when diplomatic relations were first established. Over the years, cooperation has expanded significantly, encompassing trade, economic development, security, and sustainable growth. In January 2026, the relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, creating new opportunities for collaboration in areas such as energy, green transition, innovation, and regional security.
Vietnam’s diplomatic relations with Belgium began in 1973, leading to a multifaceted partnership that includes trade, agriculture, education, science and technology, and development programs. The two countries also engage in coordinated efforts on international issues via multilateral platforms like the United Nations and ASEAN-EU frameworks.
During these visits, President To Lam is expected to reinforce political connections, deepen economic partnerships, and translate existing agreements into actionable initiatives. This series of engagements also highlights Vietnam’s broader strategy of strengthening international relations and expanding its involvement with European partners.
