This summer, Europe has experienced a surge in excess deaths, with at least 35,000 fatalities linked to a succession of intense heatwaves. As nations continue to finalize their assessments, the true death toll is anticipated to be much higher. Germany, France, and Spain have reported a combined total of over 25,000 excess deaths due to the extreme heat. In Germany, approximately 14,000 heat-related deaths have been recorded from April to early August, marking it as the deadliest summer for heat since record-keeping began. Spain has seen nearly 5,000 deaths attributed to the heat since May, also breaking previous records.

In France, around 7,300 excess deaths were reported from late May through July, although this preliminary figure does not account for August. Other European countries, such as the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have also experienced significant increases in mortality rates during these periods of extreme heat. The heatwaves have driven temperatures over 40°C across vast areas of western and central Europe, shattering numerous national and local temperature records. Scientists attribute the rising frequency and severity of such heat events to climate change.

Identifying heat-related deaths can be challenging, as extreme temperatures often exacerbate pre-existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health conditions, rather than being directly cited as the cause of death. Experts believe the total number of heat-related fatalities across Europe will rise as more delayed mortality data is collected and figures for August are included.

The alarming number of deaths underscores the increasing public health risks associated with more severe heatwaves. These events are becoming more common as global temperatures rise, emphasizing the urgent need for effective strategies to mitigate their impact and protect vulnerable populations.
